Callaway Strata Review

The Callaway Strata Series is one that will appeal most to the novice golfer.

The clubs are easy on the eye and are incredibly user friendly throughout for both the men and women’s ranges.

The clubs offer a combination of distance, forgiveness and control. There are six options available: 12, 14 and 16-piece options for men, and 11,14 and 16-piece options for women.

As one of the best value for money golf sets out there, it is very difficult to go wrong with any choice you make in the Stata series.

For Men though we recommend the 12-piece Callaway Strata set, and for Women, the 11-piece. Below is a detailed review of each.

Callaway Strata Men’s 12 Piece Set

The Strata 12 piece is a set of well-balanced clubs designed to perform with minimal effort and maximum performance right off the shelf.

The combination of the lightweight 460cc forged driver, fairway wood, hybrid, irons and putter will provide your beginner golfer with confidence from when they are teeing their ball up the 1st tee, to sinking their final putt on the last hole. The set is user friendly and provides a superb combination of control, distance and forgiveness which will ensure you are able to tackle any situation the course and elements may throw at you.

There are 3 options available (12, 14 and 16-piece), and of the choices the 12-piece is the one we would recommend as it offers the best value for money while covering all your bases, specifically for a golfer starting out on his journey

Driver

The 460cc forged driver has a large head and is a simple club with no adjustable features. The driver has an enlarged sweet spot and although the club has a fixed hosel, it is forgiving enough to ensure off centre strikes off the titanium head are not too badly punished. This sweet spot will also help you hit it farther off the tee. A headcover is also included with the club.

If you have a slower swing, you may struggle in the beginning as the enlarged head could slow your swing down further. This is just a small detail to keep in mind and may take some adjustment but time it should not be a problem. Overall, the driver delivers on multiple fronts and should you belt one out of the sweet spot, you will not be disappointed. A headcover is also included

Fairway Wood

The fairway wood has an oversized head and much like the driver, has a fair amount of forgiveness. The 3-wood has a 15.5-degree loft to it along with a 42.5 shaft.

This club is a good alternative to the driver off the tee for those who are new to the game and should provide a good foil until players upskill themselves in terms of distance and consistency.

The club has a low profile and its centre of gravity is toward the rear of the club. This feature coupled with the length of the shaft will assist high handicappers with swing speed, control and getting the ball in the air to carry maximum distance off the tee.

As a golfer starts to shift through the skill levels, the Strata 3 wood will smoothly transition from an alternative off the tee to a dependable fairway wood that will endanger many a par 5 green on your second shot. A headcover is also included

Hybrid

The hybrid in the set is a superb alternative for those having trouble with their longer irons.

The club is designed to allow the wide sole of the club head to slide underneath the golf ball. This provides solid impact and better launch angle for greater ball height and an overall consistent strike. This can instil more confidence in the golfer for a variety of shots.

Irons/Wedge

The 12-piece set comes with 4 irons (6-9) and a pitching wedge. These cavity-backed irons are equipped with a stainless steel, perimeter and expanded sweet spot and are easy to control with a great feel.

The cavity backed irons push excess steel to the outer rim of the club head (perimeter weighting), and this coupled with stainless steel shafts allow for a high degree of precision with good balance and distance. These irons are slightly heavier and with their expanded sweet spot ensure that even if the ball is mishit, it still carries a decent distance.

The pitching wedge is 44-degrees and puts you at ease with how comfortable it feels in your hands and around the greens. This pitching wedge should be the first you reach for when under 100 yards and will perform well whether you are in light rough or on the fairway.

The wedge is the heaviest iron in the bag and will assist the beginner golfer with accuracy and a tad more distance when approaching your short game.

Putter

The putter is 35inches long which tends to be the sweet spot for many golfers. The blade style head has decent size to it and some weighting near the base which gives it a good feel and allows you to control the ball. The putter also has some extension steel behind the face that helps balance and level the flat stick on the green. The overall design of the putter is clean, and it does a good job ensuring a solid forward roll.

Stand Bag

The lightweight back covers all the bases. It comes equipped with five main pockets to carry all your gear in addition to a cooler pocket to keep the drinks cold. It has a rain hood and backpack strap system which sit comfortably and distributes weight evenly. This bag is great for golfers looking to walk the course and the legs are robust and carry its weight well. The bag also ensures club protection for those looking to take advantage of a crisp dewy morning out on the course.

Additional Options for Sets

There are two additional options for the Callaway Strata golf set which provide for more versatility around the course.

The 14-piece comes with the addition of a 4 hybrid to fill the gap between the 3 wood and the 5 hybrid. The 4 & 5 hybrid are a great alternative to difficult long irons that gives you more confidence on a variety of shots. This club also will offer your more experienced golfer the opportunity to dial-in those lengthy second shots. A 54-degree sand wedge is also included for those slightly more delicate shots from closer to the green.

The 16-piece has the inclusion of a 5 wood with accompanying head cover. The 56-degree sand wedge has also been traded for a 60-degree option that has slightly more loft than your typical sand wedge and will help beginners in when their ball is in the heavy rough and, of course, the sand.

Callaway Strata Women’s 11 Piece Set

The Strata Women's 11 piece  is a set of well-balanced clubs designed to perform with minimal effort and maximum performance right off the shelf.

There are 3 options available (11, 14 and 16-piece), and of the choices the 11-piece is the one we would recommend as it offers the best value for money while covering all your bases, specifically for a golfer starting out on her journey

Driver

The set starts out with a 460cc, 16-degree forged driver that is lightweight with a titanium head. The large sweet spot allows for more forgiveness which is appealing, to especially to your beginner golfer. The high loft of this type of club will also assist with getting the ball off the tee and into the air.

When connected in the sweet spot, the driver really does pack a good punch and should leave many a golfer pleased with the results. The driver also comes with a head cover to prevent any nicks or scratches.

Fairway Wood

the fairway wood has a more aerodynamic head shape an 18-degrees of loft. This is where the set comes unstuck a bit as there is such a small degree of different when comparing the driver to the 5 wood. The set would have been better balanced if we saw a slightly bigger gap in loft between the two.

Despite this, the club is forgiving, and the head shape encourages long, high flying shots and is a good alternative to the driver. A head cover is also included.

Hybrid

The 5-hybrid rounds out the wood set your longer clubs and has a 26-degrees of loft. This is ideal for your more inexperienced golfer and will assist in getting the ball in the air and should prove a great second shot option. The hybrid in the set is a superb alternative for those having trouble with their longer irons and fulfils this role with greater consistency.

Wedges/irons

The irons come with a slightly odd ordering but are a quality product either way. A 7 and 9 iron are included along with a 54-degree sand wedge.

The gap in loft between the 9 iron (40-degree) and aforementioned sand wedge is quite large and one may want to consider filling the this space with an appropriate pitching wedge

These irons are cavity-backed with the weight centred low on the clubface which offer a great combination of forgiveness and control. The clubs are easy to hit, and the design ensures good distance and height on your shots. These irons are superb all around and it is almost a pity there are only two of the (see 14 and 16-piece additional club sets)..

Putter

The set is completed with a mallet putter in a T-style alignment. It has a decent sized head which allows for easy stroke alignment. The face of the putter is not milled which is a mark against and can affect the contact with the ball but for your entry level golfer this putter should do the job.

The Callaway Strata series comes with two additional options. A 14 piece and 16-piece set.

The 16-degree driver is replaced by a slightly less lofted 14 degree for the slightly more experienced golfer. The same switch has also been undertaken with the fairway wood which comes in at 15-degrees. The only real complaint against this option of the Strata series there is a gap in loft between the fairway wood and the hybrid thus limiting choices. The Irons and wedges do the same superb job as the standard 11 piece set with the addition of extra clubs providing more complete options. This iron set starts at a 6 iron and goes through to a sand wedge.

The 16-piece set follows the trend of the 14-piece. The loft of the driver is brought down to 10.5 degrees and loft of the fairway wood has also been reduced to 15.5 degrees. The issues of the 14-piece set are addressed and with this option, a 22 degree, 4 hybrid is included which gives the golfer the variety that was missing between the fairway wood and 5 hybrid.
